The Importance of Quality Tyres

Your vehicle’s only contact with the road, crucial for safety, handling and efficiency.

Regular Checks for Optimal Performance

Keep your tyres in top shape with regular pressure, alignment, and balance checks.

Legal Requirements

UK tyre law requires minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, no significant damage (cuts, bulges), correct inflation, and appropriate type/size for the vehicle, with fines up to £2,500 and 3 points per illegal tyre

Key Legal Requirements

  • Tread Depth:

Minimum 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width and around the circumference.

  • Condition:

No cuts (over 25mm), bulges, exposed cords, or significant damage.

  • Type & Size:

Must be the correct size and type (load/speed rating) for your vehicle.

  • Inflation:

Tyres must be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Age (for larger vehicles):

Front tyres on HGVs/buses, and all tyres on minibuses (single wheels), must be under 10 years old.

How to Check

Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs):

Raised bars in the grooves that show when 1.6mm is reached.

Coin Test:

A 20p coin inserted into the tread groove – if you can see the outer band, it’s too worn.

Prevent Uneven Wear

Maintaining proper tyre tread depth and regular checks for pressure, alignment, and balance can prevent uneven wear and promote vehicle safety.

Tyres are crucial for vehicle safety, handling, and efficiency. This can help reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall driving performance.
